What is C++?

Imagine you have a super smart robot that can do exactly what you tell it to do. C++ is the language you use to give instructions to this robot (which is actually your computer).

C++ is one of the most powerful programming languages in the world. It's used to build:

  • Video games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Call of Duty
  • Web browsers like Chrome and Firefox
  • Operating systems like Windows and parts of macOS
  • Rocket control systems and self-driving cars
  • Apps that need to be super fast

Your First C++ Program

Let's write the most famous program in programming history - one that says "Hello, World!"

Let's understand each line:

Line 1: #include <iostream>

This is like opening a toolbox. The iostream toolbox contains tools for input (reading) and output (printing to screen). You're telling C++: "Hey, I'm going to need the printing tools, so please get them ready for me."

Line 3: int main() {

This is the entrance to your program. Every C++ program must have a main() function. When you run your program, the computer starts reading from here. Think of it like the front door of a house - you have to enter through here.

The int means this function will return an integer (whole number) when it's done.

Line 4: std::cout << "Hello, World!" << std::endl;

This is where the magic happens!

  • std::cout = "console output" - it prints things to your screen
  • << = sends something to cout (think of it like an arrow pointing where data should go)
  • "Hello, World!" = the text you want to print
  • std::endl = "end line" - moves to the next line (like pressing Enter)
  • ; = semicolon - this tells C++ "I'm done with this instruction"

Line 5: return 0;

This tells the computer "Hey, the program finished successfully!" Returning 0 is like giving a thumbs-up that everything went well.

Line 6: }

This closing brace marks the end of the main() function.

Setting Up C++ on Your Computer

Before you can write C++ programs, you need to install some tools.

On Windows

Option 1: Install Visual Studio Community (Recommended)

  1. Go to visualstudio.microsoft.com
  2. Download "Visual Studio Community" (it's free!)
  3. During installation, select "Desktop development with C++"

Option 2: Install MinGW (Lightweight)

  1. Go to mingw-w64.org
  2. Download and install MinGW
  3. Use any text editor (VS Code, Notepad++, etc.)

On Mac

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Type: xcode-select --install
  3. Press Enter and follow the prompts
  4. Use any text editor or Xcode

On Linux

Open Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install g++

For other distros, use your package manager (yum, pacman, etc.)

How to Compile and Run Your Program

C++ is a compiled language. This means you write code in a .cpp file, then a special program called a compiler translates it into language your computer understands.

Step 1: Write Your Code

Create a file called hello.cpp and type in the Hello World program.

Step 2: Compile the Code

Open your terminal/command prompt and navigate to where your file is, then type:

g++ hello.cpp -o hello

What this means:

  • g++ = the C++ compiler
  • hello.cpp = your source code file
  • -o hello = output an executable file called "hello"

Step 3: Run Your Program

On Windows:

hello.exe

On Mac/Linux:

./hello

You should see:

Hello, World!

Congratulations! You just wrote and ran your first C++ program!

Understanding Errors

When learning to code, you'll make mistakes - everyone does! The compiler will give you error messages. Don't worry, they're actually helpful!

Example Error: Forgetting a semicolon

Error message:

error: expected ';' before 'return'

The compiler is telling you: "Hey, you forgot a semicolon before the return statement!"

Fix: Add the semicolon:

Let's make a program that asks for your name and greets you!

    • >> = arrow points FROM cin TO your variable

Important Rules to Remember

1. C++ is Case-Sensitive

cout and Cout are different! Always use lowercase for built-in stuff.

2. Every Statement Needs a Semicolon

Think of semicolons like periods in English. They mark the end of a thought.

std::cout << "This is correct";
std::cout << "This is also correct";

3. Use Quotes for Text

  • Double quotes for text: "Hello"
  • Single quotes for single characters: 'A'

4. Match Your Braces

Every { needs a matching }

int main() {
std::cout << "Hi!";
}

5. Include What You Use

If you use cout, include <iostream> If you use string, include <string>

Practice Exercise

Try modifying the program to:

  1. Ask for the user's age
  2. Ask for their favorite color
  3. Print all this information back

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Program Closes Immediately

If your program runs and closes too fast to see the output, add this before return 0;:

std::cout << "Press Enter to exit...";
std::cin.get();
std::cin.get();

"cout is not a member of std"

You forgot to include <iostream> at the top!

Compiler Not Found

Make sure you installed the C++ compiler correctly and it's in your system PATH.
